Dangerous rhetoric

Sir, — This has reference to the news report "Pak. will be erased if it nukes India: Fernandes" (Jan. 28). Though the statement will be hailed by those who want the tensions in India-Pakistan relationship to continue, peace-loving Indians should condemn the Defence Minister for making such a provocative statement. The only way to ease the crisis between the two countries is through diplomatic means and not through verbal exchanges. There is no need to be jingoistic and tell the world or warn Islamabad that India is stronger and more powerful than Pakistan.

If we want to project India as a peace-loving nation, we should protect the lives of minorities and put an end to human rights violations in different parts of the country.

Albert P'Rayan,

Kigali, Rwanda

Sir, — Mr. Fernandes' remarks may build up a chain reaction, which may become explosive. All peace-loving people should unite and prevent such a war of words, which may ultimately lead to a war of weapons. The Defence Minister forgets that India adjoins Pakistan and if there is a nuclear war it will also be wiped out, if not completely but substantially.

V.S. Venkatavaradan,

Salem, T.N.
