This Day That Age
Comments from the main Editorial: "The inauguration of the Academy of Dance, Drama and Music is a reminder that the Government of India takes seriously its responsibilities for cultural life. Dr. Maulana Azad pointed out that `in the old days arts were dependent mainly on the patronage of Princes while now the State, as the organised manifestation of the people's will, must undertake their maintenance and development. It is best also to remember that arts are the one department of a people's life that does not lend itself to be centrally organised. The State should proceed warily in its well-meant efforts to sustain the arts. It can legitimately give a helping hand to struggling artists. But there is no warrant for the slightest interference of authority in the spheres in which the artist should reign supreme. The government may pay the piper. But it should not claim the right to call the tune, as even in university education, it is recognised in democratic countries that the State's duty to give large grants would not justify its interference in academic matters."
