Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article by A. R. Venkatachalapathy, "When Gandhi visited Madras" (Magazine, Jan. 26), on the letters exchanged between V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and Gandhiji was moving. It is indeed sad that a leader of VOC's calibre had to come out of the prison with none to receive him. Gandhiji's noble gesture to VOC was applaudable.
G.M.K. Ranga Rao,
Sir, Though VOC evinced much interest in literary and religious activities initially, the Swadeshi movement under Gandhiji's leadership brought about a sea change in him, leading him to launch the first indigenous Indian shipping enterprise which earned him the title, Kappalottiya Tamilan. The correspondence between Gandhiji and VOC reveals the high esteem that the latter had for the former and his concern for the penury suffered by VOC.
S. Janakiraman,
