KVIC to create 2.5 lakh jobs in North East

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI Jan. 30. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) will create 2.5 lakh new jobs in the North-Eastern region during the Tenth Plan period by spending over Rs. 1000 crores.

This was stated by the KVIC chairman, Mahesh Sharma, at a press meet here today on his return from Itanagar, where the 513th meeting of the KVIC was held on January 28 and 29.

Dr. Sharma said that out of the Rs. 1000 crores, the KVIC would provide Rs. 550 crores from its own budget. For the balance, it would have to depend on the Centre's Department of North-Eastern Region (DONER), the State Governments concerned and the banks.e Centre had increased the allocation for the Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP) of the KVIC from Rs. 500 crores in the Ninth Plan to Rs. 1250 crores in the Tenth Plan, he said.

However, he was not happy with the support provided by the Governments in the North-Eastern States for their respective State KVI Boards. They had financial constraints and did not give priority to the KVI schemes.
