Mahe region declared leprosy-free: Valsaraj

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Jan. 30. The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, said the Mahe region of the Union Territory had been declared leprosy-free.

In a communication here today, he said intensive and concrete steps were taken in the Union Territory to eradicate leprosy whose prevalence in Pondicherry had been brought down to below two cases per10,000 people as on date.

Mr. Valsaraj said the Department of Health was striving hard to ensure elimination of leprosy and to establish a record of below one case per 10,000 as set out by the Centre. The availability of free multi-drug therapy at the primary health centres and hospitals was a chief feature of the efforts of the government to achieve the goal. He said that the target of elimination of leprosy would be achieved with the cooperation of the people.

A cycle rally would be flagged off by the Minister at the Kamban Kalai Arangam here tomorrow as part of efforts to create awareness among people. The department through the Leprosy Society of the State held a special anti-leprosy day programme.
