Mr. Rangasamy listened to the woes of the people who had lost their residential units and household articles in the incidents of violence. Halting at almost all the houses the ministerial team assured the people that necessary steps would be taken to provide security and restoration of peace. The Chief Minister and others also sought the cooperation of all sections of people for restoring peace. Police sources said that nearly 11 persons were arrested so far.
Books distributed
The Chief Minister distributed the books and uniforms to children in a local school premises. The children belonged to the affected families. The Social Welfare Minister gave away a cash assistance of Rs. 10,000 to enable an Adi Dravidar family to meet part of expenditure of marriage of the girl in the family. The family had lost their goods in the arson that occurred on January 26. The Chairman of the KVIB Angalan within whose Assembly constituency of Thirubuvanai the Sorapet village falls distributed stoves, garments and also school uniforms for the children . Mr. Rangasamy received petitions from the affected. An official source said that 33 persons of 13 houses were given the relief articles as an immediate measure to mitigate their sufferings. Houses would also be got ready to the families at a cost of Rs 35,000 immediately to restore the dwelling units lost in the incidents of arson. While returning to Pondicherry the Chief Minister and others were halted by a large number of residents particularly women on the other side of the village. They complained that they were spending sleepless nights all these five days as they and the children in the families were facing threat of insecurity. A group of farmers told Mr. Lakhsminarayanan and the government whip Rajavelu on Sorapet main road that they had lost their borewells in the violence. He said that fifty coconut trees and a good chunk of groundnut field were also damaged. A visibly sobbing school girl told Mr. Lakshminarayanan that there was constant threat to her personal safety from a section of people from the other group. The Senior Superintendent of Police Anandh Mohan and other senior police officials accompanied the Chief Minister and others. The people also brought to the notice of the Ministerial team that the intruders of people from neighbouring pockets fomented violence in Sorapet. There should be proper vigil on the movement of strangers in the village, the shocked women said. Police sources said that night patrolling had been intensified. In addition to Sorapet village all the villages in its vicinity were brought under surveillance. Thondamanathan, Pathukannu, Sorapet and Vinayakampet were under strict vigil now. Five mobile units were deployed in these villages. An official of the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department said that about Rs 2.85 lakh worth of property was lost in the incidents of arson and attack on houses. A small altercation between a few persons on January 26 was the origin of the big eruption of violence. The DPI leader, R. Thirumavalavan visited the village and consoled the people. The Chief Minister had already arranged for distribution of Rs. 3000 to each family in Sorapet colony.
