Govt. for short-haul air operations

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi Jan. 30. The Government will not spare any effort in making short-haul air operations a success in India and initiatives from the private sector would be encouraged, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Sripad Y. Naik, said here today while delivering the keynote address at a presentation by the Russian Aviation and Space Agency. The Minister said there was a shortage of small aircraft in the country. There were at least 50-60 routes which required 20-30 seater planes to meet their air-connectivity requirement.

According to Mr. Naik, many potential tourist and commercial destinations remained deprived of air link due to shortage of small aircraft.

In this scenario, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has to create suitable environment for the growth of private sector activity in order to cater to public demands.

He said the Government had initiated several steps for providing encouragement to the non-scheduled operators. Necessary facilitation was being provided at the airports.
