PM's security breached yet again

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JAN. 30. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's security was breached for the third time in two weeks today when a motorcyclist intruded into his motorcade at Hazrat Nizamuddin in South Delhi.

On its way back from Raj Ghat around 8.45 a.m., Mr. Vajpayee's motorcade was crossing the Subrahmanya Bharati Marg when the Additional Station House Officer of the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station spotted a motorcycle (DL 4SR 7425) moving 100 metres ahead of the convoy. He intercepted the vehicle and detained the rider, who was later taken to the Defence Colony police station for questioning by a joint team of the Delhi police and the Intelligence Bureau.

During interrogation, the detainee identified himself as Atul Kumar Tyagi, an assistant manager with the computer division of Hero Honda. He said he was on his way back from his sister's residence at Kaka Nagar.

According to the police, Atul said he was stopped at a crossing on Subrahmanya Bharati Marg due to traffic restrictions during VIP movement. He saw the President's motorcade, which was on its way to Raj Ghat, pass by his left. Minutes later, the Prime Minister's motorcade happened to pass the same way. Atul told a Central Reserve Police Force personnel deployed there that traffic restrictions had been lifted. Apparently due to fog, the 139 Battalion CRPF Head Constable Ajay Kumar too did not realise that it was the Prime Minister's motorcade and allowed Atul to proceed.

The Special Commissioner of Police, S.K. Kain, said Atul, whose sister is an Income Tax Commissioner, was released after verification of his antecedents.

He said the incident took place due to confusion created by the simultaneous movement of the President's and the Prime Minister's motorcades.
