While one independent submitted the papers before the returning officer, C. Velappan, at the Collectorate here, the other two filed their nominations before the Sattankulam tahsildar, Aiyyakutti, who is also the principal assistant returning officer, at the taluk office at Sattankulam. K. Padmarajan of Salem district, who submitted his papers at the Collectorate here, features in the Limca Book of Records 2003 under "most unsuccessful candidates". Mr. Padmarajan contested against bigwigs in both parliamentary and Assembly elections as an independent candidate and lost the polls since 1989. He contested against the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, in the Nandyal parliamentary constituency, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, at Bargur and Andipatti Assembly seats in 1996 and 2002, and the former Pondicherry Chief Minister, M.O.H. Farooq, in Pondicherry. He also contested against the former TNCC president, K.V. Thangkabalu, the film star, Radha Ravi, in Saidapet. Speaking to the media after filing his papers here today, Mr. Padmarajan said he had filed his nomination against the President, A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the former President, K.R. Narayanan, and the late Vice-President, Krishan Kant, which were however rejected. The returning officer, C. Velappan, said A. Jaffar Ali of Thanjavur district and A. Noor Muhamad of Coimbatore also filed their papers.
