Heightened security at prisons, says DG

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE FEB. 1. The DG (Prisons), M.A. Basith, has made it clear that the department has taken all steps to prevent jailbreaks.

He told reporters here on Saturday that prison authorities were fully equipped to deal with any situation. When his attention was drawn to reports in a section of the press that certain prisoners were being given preferential treatment in several prisons, including Kurnool, Mr. Basith claimed that the published photographs related to hospitals where the department had no control. "Within the four walls of prisons, no favouritism will be tolerated," he said.

About shifting of the Nellore Central Prison to Kakutur on the outskirts of Nellore, he said first of all the suitability of the land had to be assessed and then a modern prison constructed. The proposed dispensation would have an open-air jail. He ruled out setting up of new sub-jails. The existing ones would be strengthened, he added.

Earlier, he visited the cell keeping women prisoners and talked to all the inmates. Moved by the plight of a prisoner with two children, Mr. Basith instructed the authorities to immediately send the children to school. He also suggested that yoga classes be organised for the prisoners.

The DIG, Cuddapah Zone, Samuel Johnson, Superintendent, Central Prison, Nellore, Rama Govindaiah, and other officers accompanied the DG.
