Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
Tension prevails at Tiruvallur, Tirur and Aranvayal, and heavy police pickets have been posted. Top police officials including K. Natarajan, ADGP (Law and Order), and S.R. Jangidd, Chengalpattu Range DIG, are camping at Tiruvallur and monitoring the law and order situation. At Tirur, villagers did not allow the police to remove the bodies to the Tiruvallur hospital for postmortem. However, Mr. Jangidd said the situation was now under control. As news of desecration spread to the nearby Tirur, there was a clash between two communities around 1.30 p.m. in which the two Vanniar youths were killed. The Collector, N. Dhananjayan, told The Hindu that some miscreants had put a garland of chappals on the Ambedkar statue and a large number of people resorted to a road roko from 7.30 a.m. Normal traffic was restored only around 11 a.m. The Collector said he immediately rushed to the spot even skipping a review meeting held by the Law Minister, C. Jayakumar. Mr. Dhananjayan said he was watching the situation and waiting for the police report about bringing the bodies to the Government Hospital here.
