Coast Guard directive to trawlers

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Feb. 1. From today, all trawlers longer than 20 metres have to report their position to the Coast Guard control at 8 a.m.everyday. This is necessary to ensure that the Coast Guard task of guiding the trawlers away from marine sanctuaries and also acting quicker in an emergency is made easier, says a November 1 circular of the Union Agriculture Ministry, effective from today. ``We are fully prepared to take on this new task. In fact, it improves our response time,'' said the Eastern Region Commander, Commodore R. S. Vasan. Also from today, each vessel entering the Indian Search and Rescue region will have to report to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai.

This will add a new dimension to the Coast Guard's responsibilities as it embarks on its fresh tasks. The largest-ever Coast Guard exercise will take place off the Chennai coast on February 7, coinciding with the 26th anniversary of the brown water force. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, will inspect a `steam past' by nearly 20 Coast Guard vessels, a flypast of 10 Coast Guard dorniers.
