Lawyers demand transfer of Police Commissioner

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Feb. 1. Demanding the transfer of the City Police Commissioner, M.D. Singh, and the suspension of Rajajinagar police inspector, Shamanna, over 200 advocates took out a procession in the City on Saturday. The advocates were protesting against Mr. Shamanna's alleged ill-treatment of a woman advocate and the commissioner's refusal to meet them in his office.

Led by the Advocates' Association President, K.N. Subba Reddy, MLA, the lawyers marched from the City Civil Court Complex before submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, and the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, seeking immediate action against the police officers.

It is alleged that the Rajajinagar inspector misbehaved with the woman advocate on January 29. When some women lawyers went to complain to the Police Commissioner, they were allegedly detained and not allowed to meet Mr. Singh. Even Mr. Subba Reddy's efforts to present the lawyer's case before the commissioner reportedly went in vain.

"The commissioner flatly refused to meet us," the lawyers said. Thereafter, the President and office-bearers of the association, along with the woman advocates staged a dharna outside the commissioner's office. The dharna was called off only after persuasion by the senior police officers, M.N. Reddy, and Gopal Hosur.

The advocates also contested the commissioner's statement that he had refused permission for a meeting because there were about 50 lawyers. "It is utterly false," said the association's office-bearers.

A special general body meeting of the association on Friday had decided to press for Mr. Singh's transfer and Mr. Shamanna's suspension pending inquiry. The association president and office- bearers are expected to meet the Chief Minister on Monday in this connection.
