Neglected lot

Sir — I was shocked to note, from the article in the series, "Paths of innovators" (Jan. 30) that T.R. Seshadri, a towering personality in the field of chemistry and one of the very few F.R.Ss in the country, had to spend his last days in penury. This will not happen if the Government takes note of the post-retirement living conditions of its illustrious citizens in the fields of art, science and culture and comes forward with some suitable scheme to offer financial support to the needy among them. If the sportsmen of yesteryear could get generous purses through benefit matches, I wonder why international seminars on arts/science /culture cannot be organised by Government agencies which could raise money through sale of the papers read at such seminars.

It is said that Dr. Seshadri produced more than 150 doctorates in the field of chemistry and I am sure many of his old students must be occupying high posts. I wonder how none of them ever bothered to know about the health and financial condition of their esteemed guru.

D. Vasudevan,

Chennai
