Tamil Nadu restricts Punjab

CHENNAI FEB. 2. Tamil Nadu dismissed Punjab for 233 in its first innings and was 20 without loss in reply at stumps on the second day of their crucial final four-day Elite Group B Ranji Trophy encounter in Mohali on Sunday.

Resuming at 58 for three, the home team was done in by some tight bowling by the Tamil Nadu mediumpacers. M.R. Shrinivas picked up two more wickets today to finish with four for 71 while Balaji (two for 62) accounted for the dangerous Reetinder Sodhi (37), clean bowled, and skipper S. Suresh claimed the wickets of the gritty Harminder Jugnu (48) and Sandeep Sawal. Left-arm spinner Sriram took the wicket of the free-flowing Munish Sharma (45).

Bad light saw no play possible for the second day on the trot in the Elite A clash between defending champion Indian Railways and Himachal Pradesh at the Karnail Singh Stadium while only seven overs was possible, owing to the same reason, in the crucial Elite A contest between Hyderabad and Delhi at the Kotla.

In Jaipur, a 99-run seventh-wicket stand between the Sairaj Bahutule (52) and the consistent Ramesh Powar (51) saw group leader Mumbai, opting to bat, make a moderate 242 against Rajasthan in an Elite A match. The home team was 39 for one in reply.

Half-centuries by opener Amit Pathak (88) and H. Vatekar (54 batting) enabled Andhra gain the first innings lead over host Bengal in an Elite A fixture.

In a group B contest in Guwahati, Assam was comfortably placed at 167 for one at stumps after bowling out Uttar Pradesh for 211.

In Ahmedabad, R.R. Parida and Sanjay Raul knocked up hundreds after overnight centurion B.B.C.C. Mohapatra took his individual score to 175 as Orissa ran up a mammoth 589 for five declared in an Elite B match against Gujarat. In reply, the host was 54 for one at stumps.

Hyderabad 180 for five (V.V.S. Laxman 76, Vinay Kumar 60 batting) v Delhi, at Ferozeshah Kotla, Delhi.

Indian Railways v Himachal Pradesh, Karnail Singh Stadium, Delhi. No play owing to poor light.

Bengal 189 v Andhra 275 for eight (Amit Pathak 88, Venugopala Rao 42, H. Vatekar 54 batting), in Kolkata.

Mumbai 242 (Vinayak Mane 29, Amol Muzumdar 37, N. Shetty 35, Sairaj Bahutule 52, Ramesh Powar 51, Kishan Choudhary three for 44, Sanjeev Sharma three for 47, Rahul Kanwat three for 41) v Rajasthan 39 for one, in Jaipur.

Group B:

Uttar Pradesh 211 (Rohit Prakash 46, Rizwan Shamshad 40, Rahat Elahi 50, Sukhbinder Singh four for 52, Ganesh Kumar three for 34) v Assam 167 for one (Subhrajit Saikia 57 batting, Kiran Pawar 76 batting), in Guwahati.

Punjab 233 (Samrat Sharma 33, Reetinder S. Sodhi 37, Munish Sharma 45, Harminder Jugnu 48, M.R. Shrinivas four for 71) v Tamil Nadu 20 without loss, in Mohali.

Orissa 589 for five decl. (S.S. Das 60, B.B.C.C. Mohapatra 175, Rashmi Ranjan Parida 112, Sanjay Raul 128 not out, Prabanjan Mullick 61) v Gujarat 54 for one, in Ahmedabad.
