The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has found a City nursing home and one of its doctors guilty of deficient service and ordered them to pay Rs. 50,000 as compensation to patient. Shashikumar, a resident of Rajajinagar, had filed a complaint against Suresh Varve, a doctor attached to Varalakshmi Nursing Home for poor service while treating him for a fracture in his leg after he met with an accident. He was operated on by doctors at the nursing home but the fracture did not heal properly even six weeks after the surgery. Shashikumar said he could not walk because of swelling at the site of the injury. He consulted a senior orthopaedic surgeon, Srinivasan, at Manipal Hospital. A second surgery was conducted at Manipal Hospotal where it was found that a swab had been left at the fracture site during the first operation carried out at Varalakshmi Nursing Home. The wound had been stitched up leaving the swab inside. The President of the forum, T. Jayarama Chouta, and the members, Abdul Perwad and Rama Ananth, ruled that the swab carelessly left behind during surgery to treat the fracture at the nursing home had resulted in complications as diagnosed by the orthopaedic surgeon at Manipal Hospital. The forum asked the nursing home and doctor involved to pay the compensation within six weeks, failing which they would be liable to pay interest on the amount at 15 per cent.
