Probe ordered into U.S. jet sortie

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI FEB. 3. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has ordered a preliminary inquiry into the flying of an "unidentified" U.S. Air Force jet, 170 nautical miles East of Chennai airport on January 31.

According to airport sources here, the "blip movement" recordings of the "mystery sortie" by the Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tapes have already been sealed and kept ready for the probe official, who is expected to arrive here in a couple of days from New Delhi to formally commence the probe. The sources said the possible reason for the appointment of the investigating officer is that the Director General of Civil Aviation is away in Turkey attending an international conference.
