"We are appealing to all secular parties to support the Congress in the larger interest of the State as people are fed up with the anti-people policies of the AIADMK Government," the AICC secretary, Ramesh Chennithala, said. A. Mahendran, a former Youth Congress activist and a lawyer by profession, would be the party candidate in the bypoll to be held on February 26. Mr. Chennithala made the announcement after a meeting with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, along with the Tamil Nadu Congress leaders, S. Balakrishnan and E.V.K.S. Elangovan. "We are not going to have any alliance. It is a small by-election. Not much political significance should be attached to it. We are not having any formal tie-up with any party," he said, when asked to comment on the reported statement of Congress leaders seeking the DMK's support for the by-poll describing it as a "secular" party.
