Cong. announces candidate for Sattankulam

New Delhi Feb. 3. The Congress today announced its candidate for the Sattankulam Assembly by-poll and appealed to all secular parties in Tamil Nadu to support its candidate.

"We are appealing to all secular parties to support the Congress in the larger interest of the State as people are fed up with the anti-people policies of the AIADMK Government," the AICC secretary, Ramesh Chennithala, said. A. Mahendran, a former Youth Congress activist and a lawyer by profession, would be the party candidate in the bypoll to be held on February 26.

Mr. Chennithala made the announcement after a meeting with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, along with the Tamil Nadu Congress leaders, S. Balakrishnan and E.V.K.S. Elangovan.

"We are not going to have any alliance. It is a small by-election. Not much political significance should be attached to it. We are not having any formal tie-up with any party," he said, when asked to comment on the reported statement of Congress leaders seeking the DMK's support for the by-poll describing it as a "secular" party. — PTI
