Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
Talking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting, she said Karnataka had not acted on its assurance of 4,500 cusecs a day for seven days which would have enabled Tamil Nadu to realise about six tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water. Now, as against the earlier effort to save 40 per cent of the samba crop, saving even 20 per cent would be a "big thing." During the informal meeting convened by the Prime Minister on January 13, Tamil Nadu had asked for 4,500 cusecs for 14 days to save the samba crop to some extent, but Karnataka had agreed to release only 4,500 cusecs for seven days. But, "they did not do even that," she said. Tamil Nadu had no option now. The Government had already apprised the Central drought inspection team of the extent of damage to the crops due to drought. Asked about a proposal to reduce the quorum required for a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority, she said she had not heard of any such move.
