Mr. Neelamegavarnan was about to enter the village, but he was told that candidates would not be allowed entry, as the people's repeated plea for implementation of basic amenities, including drinking water and motorable roads, was ignored. They were upset when their recent appeal to the Public Works Department to release water to save the standing paddy crop on nearly 200 acres was turned down. "To convey our resentment to the candidates, we have decided to prevent the contestants from entering our village,'' they said. Though Mr. Neelamegavarnam assured them that he would bring their demands to the notice of the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, the villagers did not relent, forcing the candidate to move to the next village. Meanwhile, 11 more Independent candidates, including an AIADMK member, filed nominations for the February 26 byelection.
