Karunanidhi calls on Ilamvazhuthi in jail

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Feb. 6. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today met the party MLA, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, in the Chennai Central prison today. The meeting lasted 10 minutes. He enquired after Mr. Ilamvazhuthi's health.

The MLA was arrested and remanded to custody early on February 1, after the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, had forwarded a complaint from the Tamil Maanila Kamaraj Congress leader, D. Kumaradas. The leader alleged that Mr.Ilamvazhuthi had threatened to kill him, during heated exchanges in the Assembly.

Mr. Karunanidhi also met Suba. Veerapandiyan, who has been jailed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, for his support to the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

A violation: CPI(M)

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) today urged the Government to release Mr. Ilamvazhuthi. In a statement, the State secretary, N. Varadarjan, said the member should have been proceeded against under Assembly rules. But, the Government decided to initiate criminal proceedings in violation of conventions.

The party also condemned the arrest of a Sun TV reporter, who had gone to the Saidapet court here to cover proceedings in the `magnetic bed scam case'.
