Jailed Al-Umma leader hospitalised again

By Our Staff Reporter

Coimbatore Feb. 6. The Amir (leader) of Al-Umma undertrials in the Coimbatore serial blasts case, Md.Ansari, was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital last night for a cardiac problem. This is the second time he has been hospitalised in the past 10 days.

He was admitted to the CMCH only last week following a mild chest pain. After treatment for five days, he returned to the central prison here recently.

Last night, he was rushed to the hospital, after he complained of high blood pressure and chest pain, prison sources said. He is kept under observation in an Intensive Care Unit amid high security.

Even as the CMCH doctors are examining him, Samsunissa, wife of the undertrial, has moved a petition before the judge of the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases, R. Sivakumar, seeking transfer of Md. Ansari to a private hospital for an angiogram. She said she was preparing to bear the cost.

The sources said citing the previous CMCH discharge report, she stressed the need for an angiogram. The Special Court sought a report from the prison authorities on Ansari's health condition and a medical report, besides details whether angiogram facilities were available at the CMCH. On getting the reports, the court was likely to pass an order on the same, an advocate said.

Meanwhile, it has been decided to name one of the 166 Al-Umma undertrials interim Amir. Only on February 12 (Bakrid), 2001, did Md.Ansari took over from the founder- leader, Syed Ahmed Basha. According to the prison sources, Thittacheri Khader of Nagercoil is likely to be named Amir. This exercise is a must to maintain solidarity among the undertrials and to defend and protect their rights, say the sources.

The Amir would be representing their case before courts. Naming an interim Amir was imperative to decide who should attend court on a particular day and who could remain in the prison to meet their family members/advocates.

The name of another undertrial and ace-bomb maker, Zakir Hussain, was also doing the rounds.

The prison officials, who are watching the developments keenly, say that `TADA' Aslam may also be in the race.

The prison sources termed rumours of a permanent change in Al-Umma leadership in the central prison as a calculated effort by some vested interest aimed at engineering a split in the organisation.
