Multi-modal commuter system for Hyderabad?

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI FEB. 7. A comfortable, efficient and affordable multi-modal suburban commuter transportation system is on the cards for Hyderabad to ease congestion. About 50 per cent of the cost of the proposed suburban commuter project would be shared by the Andhra Pradesh Government, the Minister of State for Railways, Bandaru Dattatraya, said here today.

Train services on the Hyderabad-Lingampalli section are likely to be introduced next month, he added.

The Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) Phase-II would be constructed in Chennai between Thiru Mayilai and Vellacherry with two-third cost being shared by the Tamil Nadu Government. Similarly, extension of the Kolkata Metro was being undertaken from Tolly Gunj to Gairia with one-third of the cost being borne by the West Bengal Government, he said.

Addressing a symposium on urban transport, organised by the French Embassy here, Mr. Dattaraya said the Railways was operating suburban railway systems in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Suburban trains carry 21 per cent of the total passenger traffic of 320 billion passenger kilometres but contribute only 12 per cent of the total earnings of about $1.56 billion.
