The opening ceremony was attended by the former Prime Minister, I. K. Gujral, Inderjit Gupta and people such as Kuldip Nayar, and all of them appreciated the move, he said. But "repression" against the office started last year when its deputy bureau chief, G.M. Bhat, was arrested. "So in order to make things clear we demand that an impartial inquiry be conducted by none else but Mr. Gujral and Ravi Nair. We will cooperate with them and the GOI should also cooperate. Whatever the findings we will accept," Mr. Malik said. He accused the BJP Government of doing so with an eye on the Himachal elections. "They did the same thing in Gujarat and raised the issue of my release when the same BJP Government had released me last year also," he said adding "character assassination of the Hurriyat leader will only create a vacuum in leadership".
