Buses torched

By K. Balchand

PATNA FEB. 8. The bandh called by the NDA to protest the growing incidents of crime in Bihar evoked a mixed response in the wake of the safe return of the abducted orthopaedic surgeon, Bharat Singh, on Friday night and the arrest of six members of the Sultan Mian gang, which was behind the abduction.

Dr. Singh's abduction on Wednesday last was one of the reasons for the bandh call. Educational institutions were closed, while shops had their shutters down only in the main thoroughfares. Police fired teargas to disperse a mob, which went on the rampage, damaging private vehicles and setting fire to buses carrying those who had courted arrest.
