Speaking at a function organised to celebrate the 126th birth anniversary of M.N. Krishna Rau at the Indian Institute for World Culture here, the minister said the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) should release more funds to upgrade the park. With the increasing amount of pollution, it was necessary to develop parks, Mr. Kumar said. In 1937, Mr. Rau donated money to set up the park, presently known as Sir M.N. Krishna Rau Park for Women and Children. The park, constructed in 1940, is spread over 96,096 sq. m, with a pavilion in the centre. Mr. Rau was a good administrator in the Government of Mysore and served as comptroller and financial secretary and officiated as Dewan of Mysore. He was known for his straightforwardness, good character, and innate modesty. He took decisions based on facts and figures, the minister said. His sterling virtues and skilful management of the financial resources of Mysore were appropriately honoured by conferring on him the titles "Rajakaryaprasktha" in 1922 and "Dewan Bahadur" in 1925. Mr. Kumar also suggested to the State Government to include the name of Mr. Rau in school textbooks. With his world vision, Mr. Rau contributed immensely to the development of Mysore. His services were used by the Wadiyars of Mysore to construct irrigation projects. He was involved in the financing of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam, Mr. Kumar said. The BMP Commissioner, M.R. Srinivasa Murthy, said the funds to upgrade the park would be released soon and all works would be completed before the coming monsoon. It would be developed into a model park. The local BMP councillor, P.R. Ramesh, said repairs of the park had commenced. Two borewells had been drilled and fencing work completed. The office-bearers of the Sir M.N. Krishna Rau Memorial Trust were present. The trust was formed in 1997 with the intention to propagate the vision, ideals, and intentions of Mr. Rau.
