`Centre misleading people on Ayodhya'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI FEB. 8. The Centre's decision to move the Supreme Court demanding surrender of a portion of land near the disputed structure at Ayodhya was taken only to please the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board member, Kamaal Farooqi, said today.

Describing it a political move, Mr. Farooqi told presspersons here that in its 1993 order, the apex court did not differentiate the land as disputed one or otherwise.

While the court considered the entire stretch as one block, it was surprising to see the Centre demanding a major portion of the land on the ground that it was not in dispute.

"Having tasted blood in Gujarat, the BJP is planning to fan communal passion again on the eve of election in four States. The Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, may even go in for a general election."

Accusing the Union Government of misleading the people, he said that "while the Centre and the Sangh Parivar are at liberty to move the court, the nation must be told the real position with regard to acquisition, its purpose and the limitations of the parties to the case," Mr. Farooqi said.

He was here to receive Rs. 6.6 lakhs collected by the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam for fighting the cases relating to the Babri Masjid issue.

The amount was collected on December 6, 2002, according to the TMMK president, M.H. Jawahirullah.
