By Mohandas Menon
South Africa and the West Indies first played a LOI match during the 1992 World Cup at Christchurch on 5-3-1992, when the former won by 64 runs. Since then, they have played 26 matches, with the South Africans winning 18 and West Indies just eight. They have so far met each other in two World Cup matches - South Africa winning in 1992 while the West Indies won the Karachi match by 19 runs in 1996. The highest team total for South Africa against the Windies is the 297-5 made at Lahore on 3-11-1997, while West Indies' highest is the 293-8 in the same match. The Caribbean team made 132 at Cape Town on 2-2-1999, the lowest between the two sides while South Africa's 140-9 also at Cape Town on 17-2-1993 in the allocated 50 overs remains its lowest. In all eight hundreds have been scored by West Indians, while South Africans have four (of which Hershelle Gibbs has three). Shivnarine Chanderpaul's 150 (in 136 balls) at East London on 24-1-1999 is the highest, while Gibbs' 125 (in 146 balls) at Port Elizabeth on 30-1-1999 is the best by a South African batsman against West Indies. Brian Lara has the highest run aggregate of 854 runs (avg. 40.67) in 23 matches, while Jonty Rhodes has 646 runs (avg. 34.00) in 24 matches for the South Africans. Jacques Kallis - 27 wickets (avg. 16.85) in 15 matches and Carl Hooper - 25 wickets (avg. 32.26) are the top wicket-takers for the respective countries. Shaun Pollock, 6-35 in 10 overs at East London on 24-1-1999, has the best bowling figures, while occasional left-arm spinner Keith Arthurton's 4-44 in 6.5 overs at Bloemfontein on 5-2-1999 has the best bowling for the Windies. Cup openers The concept of playing the `opener' in a World Cup began in 1987, when host Pakistan met Sri Lanka at Hyderabad (in Pakistan).
