The entire Samaj Shakti Party, a breakaway group of the Bahujan Samaj Party, today merged with the Congress.
About 5,000 workers of the Samaj Shakti Party, which had broken away from the BSP two years ago, had come all the way to Delhi from Haryana to join the Congress today under the leadership of their president, Aman Kumar Nagra, the former Chief Minister and State Congress chief, Bhajan Lal, told a press conference here.
He said Mr. Nagra, a former MLA from Ambala, had run the BSP party organisation in Haryana for a number of years before he left the party two years ago along with his followers and formed his own party, Samaj Shakti Party, following a dispute with BSP leader, Mayawati.
Mr. Nagra had joined the Congress with his band of followers to strengthen the organisation with the belief that only this party alone as national party could lead the country, Mr. Bhajan Lal said. He denied the suggestion that this was a move against the BSP welcoming the seven Congress MLAs who had defected from their party in Uttar Pradesh. UNI
