Tech fair does business worth $15.23 million

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI FEB. 8. The 15th International Engineering and Technology Fair -- IETF-2003 -- ended here today on a happy note, generating business worth 15.23 million dollars. The show, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry with China as the partner country, saw nearly 3,000 companies from India and abroad showcasing their products and services.

The day also marked the closure of a concurrent show -- the maiden edition of "The India Infrastructure Show''.

Claiming that the show evoked a tremendous response from the Indian industry, the Chairman of CII's Economic Affairs Committee, S.K.Munjal, said IETF-2003 was purely b2b (business-to-business) which succeeded in generating 6,200 business enquiries. Over 50,000 registered business visitors turned up during the four-day show, he added.

Stating that the fruitful partnership with China would continue at the "Made In India'' show in Beijing to be held in October this year, the head of CII Trade Fairs, Subodh Bhargava, said that of the total trade, the Chinese share was over 20 per cent which was focused on steel, consumer goods and machine tools.

He also announced plans to re-engineer the fair from next year so that a sharper focus could be laid on city infrastructure, for which State Governments, district bodies and municipal corporations would also be invited. All seven different sectors of the fair, particularly those dedicated to biotech and autocare, generated good business, he added.

Meanwhile, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, R.S. Prasad, said the Government was committed to acting as a facilitator to motivate entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the fair, Mr. Prasad stressed the need to highlight abroad the success stories happening in different sectors of the economy.

Noting that Indian films were popular in China, the Minister said there was a great scope for cooperation between the two countries in the field showing the world what creativity and ingenuity could do to promote trade and bilateral ties. "The Government is there to provide infrastructure, policy and legal framework,'' he added.

The Chinese Vice-Minister for Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, An Min, said trade between India and China had crossed 5 billion dollars last year and the fundamental interests of the two countries lay in developing it further to promote peace and prosperity in Asia and the world.
