They `walked to clear the haze'

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Feb. 8. They walked with gusto from Cubbon Park for about 2 km. on Saturday morning. The `walkathon' organised by HelpAge India had enough participants in schoolchildren and teenagers to elders.

`Walk to Clear the Haze' was the theme, and those marching wanted to tell people how their generosity could make all the difference to elderly people with cataract, who need treatment to save their eyesight but have no access to medical care either due to poverty or simply because there are no facilities nearby.

Cartoonist Ponnappa was the guest of honour, and the Regional Manager of The Hindu, V.V.K. Mani, flagged off the walkers. Donor cards to raise funds for free cataract operations were distributed through the walkathon. Last year, 10,000 cataract operations were conducted in Karnataka through project partners.

The walk had the support of eminent Bangaloreans such as Ashwini Nachappa and Priscilla Corner. Many students from Cambridge School, Yelahanka, Stracey Memorial School, St. Xavier's School, and Kendriya Vidyalaya at ASC Centre, and executives from corporates such as Sonata, Oracle and IT Solutions participated to show their solidarity. United India Insurance Co., Oriental Insurance Co., Gangothri Sweets, Pepsi, Manipal Press, Bisleri, and Hotel Grand Ashok sponsored the programme.
