Interlinking rivers

Sir, — Different views are being expressed about the project on interlinking of rivers. Its estimated cost of about five-and-a-half trillion rupees is tantalising and one wonders if we can afford it. But the bottom line is, it is a must. It will facilitate diversion of the surplus waters — which create frequent floods in some regions and go waste to the sea — and to divert them to the water-starved areas. The feasibility and viability of the project has been established beyond doubt by the National Water Development Agency after one-and-a-half decades of surveying. The work is still on to complete the feasibility report. To raise doubts about the need for the project or its feasibility at this stage would render the exercise meaningless.

P. K. Parameswaran,
Chennai
