BJP committed to rooting out terrorism: Venkaiah Naidu

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH Feb. 9. The BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, said that the NDA Government is committed to rooting out terrorism with an iron hand and thwarting the attempts of terrorist organisations supported by Pakistan to resort to destruction in the country.

Addressing a public meeting here on Saturday night, Mr. Naidu called for public support for the Bharatiya Janata Party in its fight against terrorism. Asserting that there was no scope for hereditary rule in the BJP like in other parties, he said the party was forging ahead with young blood. The BJP was only halfway through its goal, he said.

Alleging that terrorism had spread its ugly tentacles in the nation during the Congress rule, he charged the Congress with raking up casteism due to its `vote-bank' politics and not giving due representation to the rural areas. The BJP viewed the Congress and Communist parties as its political adversaries, but not as enemies, he said.

Mr. Naidu ridiculed the State Congress leaders' promise of free power supply to farmers and dubbed it as an impracticable proposition. He wanted Congress leaders to explain why they were not trying to supply free power in Karnataka and Punjab ruled by the party. He laid emphasis on linkage of rivers for augmenting irrigation facilities.

The Union Minister of State for Railways, B. Dattatreya, said that the BJP's popularity had increased since its victory in Gujarat. Stating that the NDA Government was expanding the railway network in the country, he charged the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, with not evincing any interest in developing railway facilities in the State during his rule.

The Union Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, U. Krishnam Raju, said that the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, was determined to accord priority to rural development and hence was allotting substantial funds to gram panchayats. The BJP State president, C. Ramachandra Reddy, stressed the need for completion of irrigation projects in Rayalaseema region. The Centre constituted a committee to study the river linkage proposals, he added.
