Flimsy proof?

Sir, — This is with reference to the United States' Secretary of State, Colin Powell's recent address to the United Nations. After vacillating for months, Gen. Powell finally decided to show the world ``proof''' about Iraqi violations.

Why did he not do this last November or December? That would have given the U.N. inspectors a chance to verify the veracity of these charges.

Given the delay in producing such flimsy proof, the U.S. cannot push for war without giving the weapons inspectors time to prove that Iraq indeed is violating the U.N. resolution.

On earlier occasions, the U.N. inspectors had disproved many of the charges of the U.S. and the U.K. against Iraq.

The U.S. has not produced concrete evidence about Al-Qaeda's ties with Iraq. If visits by Al-Qaeda are enough to connect them to the Iraqi regime, then the U.S. should have attacked Pakistan a long time ago since the outfit flourished in Pakistan and Afghanistan with the help of Pakistani Governments.

Suresh M. Sheth,
Irvine, CA, U.S.
