dated February 11, 1953: "Think again, Ike"

As it seemed that the U.S. was planning to use de-neutralised Formosa for operations against mainland China, a hard-hitting open letter to President Eisenhower was published in the Sunday Pictorial of London under the above caption. The letter by the Editor said, "Your first 19 days have been disastrous. They have caused a crisis between Britain and the United States, and heightened the danger of World War III. Your decision to let Chiang Kai-Shek out of his political cage on Formosa and giving him an All Clear to attack the Chinese mainland will, at best, be a military flop. At worst, it may extend the Korean war. A blockade of the Chinese coast would bring America to the verge of an all-out war with China, lead to new trouble with Russia, and end all hopes of truce in Korea. British ships for Hong Kong would be challenged on the high seas. "Are you prepared for such tension? Your travelling salesman for the big stick, Mr. John Foster Dulles' talks while visiting Europe have been not that of a friend and partner, but of a boss."
