This Day That Age
Dr. Frank P. Graham, U.N. Kashmir Mediator, said in a telegram to Mr. Nehru, "My colleagues and myself who had the privilege of knowing Sri Gopalaswami Ayyangar, express our profound sympathy in the loss of such a distinguished statesman, and our sense of personal loss of a dear friend." Mr. Girja Shankar Bajpai, leader of the Indian delegation to the Kashmir talks, said, "The death of Mr. Ayyangar removes from the scene a statesman of great wisdom, ripe experience and exceptional gifts in administration. India could ill-afford to lose a man of his quality at the present juncture. His death will be widely mourned by friends in and outside India who admired him as a statesman, and his great capacity for friendship." Patrick Gordon-Walker, former Commonwealth Relations Secretary in the Labour Government, said, "I remember Mr. Ayyangar very well. We had long talks when Prime Minister Attlee sent me to India in 1948 in connection with India's decision to become a Republic. I greatly admired his clear mind and strength of will. Mr. Ayyangar's death will be a great loss to India as well as to the Commonwealth."
