Tea auction to go electronic

By Our Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE FEB. 10. The Tea Manufacturers' Industrial Services Co-operative Society (Teaserve) would be the first in the world to conduct electronic auction in tea. "We are planning to use even electronic tongue and nose to taste tea," T. Udayachandran, Chairman and Managing Director, Indcoserve, Coonoor, where the auction centre would be located, told The Hindu. Though electronic auction system had been in vogue for various other commodities, `manual' system continued for tea all over the world.

Under the new system Teaserve would act as broker and organiser at this auction centre. "Hence there will be no role for regular brokers at all".

"There are plans to do auction on-line later with hubs opened at various tea consuming centres in the country".

The electronic system would ensure transparency and would follow "parallel incremental bidding with catalogues opened simultaneously". The `solution provider' would be finalised within a fortnight. It had been proposed to have this agency on build-own-operate model for three years by collecting user charges. With regard to electronic tongue and nose for tea tasting, he said it was at initial stages.
