Talking to newspersons in the weekend, the company chairman-cum-managing director, R. P. Singh, said the southern region would benefit from the scheduled commissioning of East-South interconnector transmission system. This was in addition to bringing in the much required stability to the southern grid covering the power starved Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The first phase of the project was commissioned nine months ahead of schedule in September. The company was also interested to add redundant capacities to the transmission system for use in emergencies at an additional cost of about Rs. 600 crores. The plan, however, could not be fructified as the beneficiaries declined to share the cost. Consequently PGCIL has to use the loop through Rourkela-Raipur and Raipur-Chandrapur to save the southern grid from collapse in case the Talcher-Kolar connector faces problems. Meanwhile, the company has decided to set up a load despatch centre in the North East soon and modernise the eastern regional LDC in Kolkata.
