The California-based Oracle Corporation, one of the Big 3 among American software giants, is so happy with the performance of its Indian development centres that it is seeking to almost double its staff strength in this country in the near future. In an interaction with the media in Goa recently, on the occasion of the completion of a decade of Oracle's presence in India, Shekhar Dasgupta, Managing Director of Oracle India Pvt. Ltd., pointed out that the ramp up of employee strength had been steep in the past few years, from just 529 at the end of financial year 1999 to 2,460 at present, making Oracle the largest MNC software employer in the country. Mr. Dasgupta indicated that the company intends to soon (perhaps in another year) increase this number to 4,000. Besides owning the two lakh sq. ft. Oracle Technology Park Oracle in Bangalore and renting 1.50 lakh sq. ft. in Hyderabad's Hi Tec City, Oracle India has now acquired seven acres in Cyberabad (outside Hyderabad) for setting up a new campus to accommodate the growing staff strength. It is not sheer numbers that is impressive about Oracle's Indian presence. The level of work being done at the company's two development centres in Bangalore and Hyderabad, says Murali Subramanian, Vice President, ERP Applications Development, Oracle India, is at the cutting edge of technology and involves all stages of product development from concept to debugging. In addition to product development, other services provided from India for Oracle Corporation include a global support centre, a global consultancy company and a global centre for in-company financial information. Since it set up shop back in 1992, Oracle India has become the leading RDBMS (relational database management software) vendor in the country, particularly to the telecom, banking and, insurance sectors, says Vivek Marla, Senior Director (corporate sales for Oracle India). Oracle India has 175 applications (ERP, CRM, SCM) and 6,000 technology customers in the country today and works with over 150 partners such as TCS. The new thrust will be towards the manufacturing and distribution (particularly pharma) and utilities sectors that are seeing a lot of action. Another focus area will be promoting the use of Oracle tools in small and medium enterprises. But, perhaps, one sector that has Oracle India's executives most excited is the Government, particularly in the States. Oracle India already has projects in action in providing Citizen Services in Andhra Pradesh (e-Seva) and enhancing tax revenue collection in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. With elections due soon in several States, many more State governments are likely to take up e-Governance systems to make life easier for their citizens and earn their goodwill. And Oracle has the tools and expertise to enable this e-Governance.
