Take steps to protect soil, vegetation: Malkani

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Feb. 10. The Lt. Governor, K. R. Malkani, has called for establishment of what he called a World Protection or Preservation Organisation to sustain an integral link between soil, vegetation and animals for benefit of mankind.

Inaugurating a six-day long international workshop on 'environmental changes and emerging issues', organised by a Pondicherry-based French Institute in collaboration with scientific organisations here today, Mr. Malkani said "what is vastly important is to have a World Protection Organisation".

Mr. Malkani said efforts should be made to retain the integral link between soil, vegetation and animals, and appealed to the scientists, participating in the deliberations, to bestow their attention on such issues.

The French Consul General in Pondicherry, Michel Seguy, said the workshop was most important and he hoped the deliberations would help the participants who included delegates from Sri Lanka, Germany, France, Thailand and Bangladesh, besides India, to evolve excellent results. The Director in charge of the French Institute, Michel Perraudin, who is the secretary general of the workshop, presented the materials to the Lt Governor and the Consul General.

Ashok Kumar Singhvi of the `Past Global Changes (PAGES)' Switzerland, who presented details on the activities of the PAGES, said Geology had no frontiers as it belonged to global community. The workshop, which also has a training component, was being held in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, ISRO, Geosphere Biosphere Programme, the French and German Embassies in India and also the PAGES.

Fifty-five delegates from different parts of the world and India are participating in the deliberations.
