The former MLA and the vedike president, K. Prabhakara Reddy, told presspersons here today that some private English-medium schools had "illegally" commenced the admission process for nursery and primary classes though the Government had instructed that the admission process should begin only in April. These schools were collecting donations from affluent parents and refusing to entertain the less affluent, particularly salaried class parents. They were also swindling parents by insisting that they purchase uniforms and books being sold by the school authorities. The Minister for Primary and Higher Education and the Education Commissioner were fully aware of the "illegal activities of these schools and are indirectly supporting them by maintaining silence", he alleged. Referring to the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, he said that demanding donation was a punishable offence. The vedike would hold meetings in each locality of Bangalore from February 15 demanding that the Government enforce the Education Act, he said.
