Answering queries at a press conference here today, Mr. Caillouet said the EU was concerned and, in fact, was considering all sorts of ways to find a way out for India. There were working groups in the EU putting their heads together to come up with ways to rid India of terrorism. India was on the top of the list as a partner in trade and socio-economic, and the EU would do everything that was necessary to protect India's interests, he asserted. Explaining another concern of the EU, Mr. Caillouet stated that India should understand that by maintaining high tariffs it might not get the full benefits of foreign direct investment. He denied that there were any trade or tariff barriers in the EU and said it was an open market, particularly for India. The EU was also collaborating with Indian experts in fields such as textiles, agribusiness, and information technology. He said the private sector was expected to participate in these fields. However, there was an urgent need for the improvement of quality of goods and services in India. This was yet another area where the EU could assist India considerably by transferring know-how on quality improvement. He said trade and commerce were going to be the main themes that would define relations between India and the EU which, with 70 million people, had the third largest population after China and India.
