Probe looking into charges against Inspector: Commissioner

By Our Staff Correspondent

Mysore Feb. 10. The Mysore Police Commissioner, Bipin Gopalakrishna, said here today that the internal inquiry initiated to look into the allegations made in a Station House Diary by the Sub-Inspector, Cheluve Shetty, was going into specific allegations made against the Circle Inspector, Marikale Gowda.

He said the inquiry was focusing on the allegations of corruption and abuse of subordinates against Mr. Marikale Gowda. However, the inquiry was not going into the `Mysore episode' which had been inquired into by the panel of three judges appointed by the Supreme Court.

Mr. Shetty has been transferred to N.R. Police Station from Vijayanagar following a request from him. When contacted by The Hindu, Mr. Shetty refused to comment stating that he had already deposed before the judges' panel.

The `Mysore episode' controversy took an interesting turn after the Station House Diary was leaked to the press. It contained specific references to the alleged episode and the attempts made by some senior police officers to suppress the facts. The diary entries made by Mr. Shetty, who later deposed before the judges' panel, also contained allegations of corruption against Mr. Marikale Gowda.

The Mysore and Chamarajanagar Districts Farmers' Welfare Committee President, Mallesh, said that in case there were any doubts about Mr. Shetty's entries in the diary, a probe by an independent investigating agency such as the CBI could be ordered in the public interest..

Mr. Mallesh pointed out that only after Mr. Shetty was examined by the panel of judges were the Mysore Principal and Sessions Court Judge, K.G. Hosur, and the III Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ravindranath, transferred, along with the Police Commissioner, C. Chandrashekar.

The reason for the transfers should be given by the appropriate authorities as the popular feeling was that they were transferred based on Mr. Shetty's deposition before the judges' panel, he said.

Mr. Mallesh also said the judges' panel appointed by the Supreme Court should have given more importance to the diary as it was the only documentary evidence known to be available on the episode.
