Medical college fees likely to be Rs. 1.5 lakhs

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM FEB. 10. The Government would be taking the expenses incurred by the Government in running medical colleges as a benchmark for recommending the fee structure for unaided medical colleges.

This would come to around Rs. 1.5 lakhs.

The Principal Secretary (Higher Education), K. Mohandas, on Monday held a second round of discussions with the management of the Pushpagiri Medical College on the free structure as directed by the High Court.

However, an understanding could not be reached.

The management said that it would agree to a fee of Rs. 2.5 lakhs per student per annum. It would also offer scholarships (full fee concession) to ten students.

Mr. Mohandas informed than that no figure above Rs. 1.5 lakhs could be considered without detailed assessment of the costs.

The management had claimed that their costs per student is Rs. 4.38 lakhs rupees per annum. But the costs at Government colleges were lower. Besides, the unaided colleges derived a business income from treatment of patients using the facilities set up for the college while the Government was offering free treatment.

The case filed by the management seeking revision of the fee fixed by the Government is to come up before the Court on February 13. The Government would file its statement before that.
