Case against Elangovan for 'derogatory' speech

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI FEB. 10. The Government has filed a case against the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, for making "derogatory statements" against the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, at an election meeting at Uthamapalayam (Theni district) in October last.

According to police sources, the public prosecutor, Tamilselvan, filed the complaint on behalf of the Chief Minister in a Madurai court today, and it was taken on file.

The principal district and sessions judge, T.V. Masilamani, posted the case for hearing on March 18 and issued summons to Mr. Elangovan for personal appearance.

The complainant alleged that the accused had made "provocative" and "baseless" statements, aimed at bringing disrepute to Ms. Jayalalithaa. Roadside meetings were organised at various places to campaign for the Congress candidate, Sathiamoorthy, who contested for the Uthamapalayam town panchayat chairman vacancy.
