Karunanidhi flays 'mute' EC

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI FEB. 10. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today alleged that the Election Commission was remaining a mute spectator to various ``irregularities'' being committed by the Government in favour of the AIADMK in Sattankulam, where a byelection is due on February 26.

That no action was taken against the Government, which was ``allowing the AIADMK to violate'' the election code at will showed the EC in a poor light, he told newsmen here.

Criticising the Chief Minister for her ``extravagance'' flying a private aircraft to Delhi instead of taking regular flights, and her proposal to construct a new Secretariat building at a cost of Rs. 60 crores, Mr. Karunanidhi asked whether these were austerity measures?

Referring to the CPI (M) contention that that no common front was formed with the DMK, the PMK and the MDMK, Mr. Karunanidhi said that at a meeting organised in the city recently, he had only said the present Opposition unity would continue to oppose the anti-democratic activities of the ruling party, to protect democracy, and to save people, who were affected by drought.
