Some of the issues facing medical professionals are accidental or suicidal ingestion of acid or alkali, heartburn (reflux) and motility disorders of the oesophagus. Reflux disease, or heartburn, can be managed better thanks to the advent of endoscopy and manometric studies, besides facility to monitor 24-hour pH, says S.M. Chandramohan, secretary-general of the conference, to be held from February 21 to 23. Advances in the areas of drugs, endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques have changed the outcome of various conditions. The conference chairman is N. Rangabashyam, and it will witness the inauguration of the Indian Section of ISDE. There will be workshops conducted at the MedIndia Hospital, Nungambakkam, witnessed through a tele-link at the conference venue by the delegates. Medical professionals will be updated on the management of cancer of the oesophagus, including surgical options which will be demonstrated. The first ISDE India oration will be delivered on the occasion by Richard Steyn from the U.K., while the Shriprakash Endowment Lecture will be delivered by Dhru Prakash, also from the U.K. The experience of running patient support groups, such as the Association of Esophageal Cancer Patients in the U.K., and the role of palliation, will be highlighted.
