College building in bad shape

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Feb. 10. Imagine children pursuing studies in a dilapidated structure which might cave in any time. In Husaini Alam area of the Old City, this is precisely the case. Authorities at the Government Degree College for Women are forced to make use of the century-old Khurshid Jah Deori to run classes and hold functions for want of space.

Though the Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) has constructed a new building at a cost of Rs. 1.2 crore last year, the sheer number of students make it insufficient. Apart from the degree college, a junior college and a high school also function from the same premises. The total strength exceeds 2000 and there is just no place to accommodate them all. "We have no rooms for labs. For conferences and functions, we are forced to make use of this old building although we are told not to'', said the principal, Kamala Govind Rao.
