Measures suggested to check violation of building norms

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Feb. 10. The three-member team from the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore, consisting of Chia Yeou Cheong, N.G. Cher Cheng and Chionh Chye Khye, has suggested the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad to impose stiff monetary fines on violators of building regulation norms and unauthorised constructions.

The team interacted with officials of the MCH and gained an insight into its functioning, especially the town planning section on Monday.

The island-nation has been able to arrest the unauthorised constructions and norm violations by imposing stiff fines which are doubled in case of delay in payment. And, if the charge against the builders is established, the offending party has to pay for the demolitions as well. The architects and engineers on such projects are also blacklisted, the Singaporean team told the MCH.

The delegation noted with appreciation the road widening works and greenery in the city as also the modern lighting system. The MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramachandran, said that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, had already sought a study into the MCH Act to bring about necessary changes. "The effort is to make it easy for those abiding by law and act sternly against the violators,'' she said.

Meets HUDA officials

The team led by Mr. Khye also held talks with officials of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and discussed the possibility of a technical collaboration in implementing HUDA projects.

The Special Officer (RMP), of the HUDA, S.P. Shorey, made a presentation on the salient features of the Draft Revised Master Plan for Hyderabad 2020. The team went around the exhibition put up on the master Plan in HUDA Central Office.

The visitors exchanged notes with HUDA officials including Vivek Deshmukh, Superintending Engineer, on various issues like planning, enforcement and implementation procedures followed by the HUDA. A press release said the delegation expressed keen interest in providing consultancy to projects envisaged in the Master Plan, Cyberabad Development Authority and the Hyderabad Airport Development Authority.
