Sir, At the condolence meeting to mourn Kalpana Chawla's death, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, christened the ISRO's meteorological satellite, launched in September last through PSLV-IV, `Kalpana-I'. But the real tribute lies in the removal of the ills plaguing women such as female infanticide, dowry deaths and gender discrimination.

* * * Sir, Apropos the news item `Bharat Ratna sought for Kalpana Chawla' (Feb. 10), nobody can deny that she was a courageous lady. However, the fact that she was an astronaut and flew in the Columbia space shuttle is no reason for bestowing the award on her.
